Picket fence designs: A new look at an old favorite

A board fence doesn’t have to be a “bored” fence. Make yours a little different, and add a new dimension to your yard.

Naturally, form should follow function. So for security, privacy or protection from the elements (or to avoid a nasty view), build a tall fence. But spruce it up with wooden trim (look at doors and furniture for ideas), unique profiles, or the creative use of lattice. Or build an open, airy fence, letting a hedge or vines do the privacy work.

Then there’s the traditional picket fence, perfect if you just want to mark off your private domain, add a visual accent to your yard, or draw attention to a nice feature of your landscaping. It doesn’t have to be plain old pointed pickets. Let your imagination go. Here are a few ideas to get your creativity flowing.

Vary the profile at the tops of pickets or drill holes in your fence rails and insert dowels. Make your posts stand out with ornamental moldings and capping details.
